For those of us living this side of the pacific rim, bonefishing can be quite a costly and time consuming affair, and remains but a dream for most. A trip to the famed bonefish grounds of X’mas Island or Seychelles will easily set you back no less than USD5,000 and that doesn’t include your airfare…. don’t even think about Key West, Andros, Cuba, or Belize unless you have the Money and Time!
So, where does a poor deprived Asian fly fisherman with dreams of bonefish head for to satisfy his craving? Well, for starters, there are about 1,200 islands in the atoll nation of Maldives in the Indian Ocean just south of Sri Lanka. Many of these islands are barely inhabited and have beautiful lagoons and sand flats. The trick lies in identifying areas harboring conditions conducive for the Ghost of the Flats. Sand flats abound but not all flats will have bonefish.
The bonefishery in Maldives is pretty much in its infancy, having only been explored by Malaysian & Singaporean fly enthusiasts within the last 8 years or so. Fly fisherman don’t have the luxury of flats skiffs and guides over here, so all the knowledge gained about these elusive creatures has been through a steep learning curve. Whether or not the Maldives supports a prolific bonefishery is anybody’s guess, but there are many other species that roam the tidal flats and coral reefs; enough to keep one coming back for more year after year!
If you are planning to do some flats fishing, a reliable set-up I recommend would be:
1. 6 to 8 weight fast action rod
2. Saltwater reel with smooth reliable sealed drag and low starting inertia.
3. Intermediate line (If you only had one choice of fly line, this would be the one)
4. Floating line
5. Stripping basket (pain in the ass when your sinking line gets stuck in the corals…)
6. Rapid dry clothing
7. hydration pack, waist pouch or backpack
8. neoprene socks, wading boots or wading sandals(my preference)
9. Clousers, Charlies, and Crabs (my 3 C’s), and
10. last but not least, plenty of sun screen
