I have to disagree on that.  A $100 dollars Fuji reel can almost function the same as a $2000 dollars fancy reel.  I think the rod is more important as it is the link between you and the fish...catch it or not is largely depending on the rod itself (well not considering the angler's technique)..

So I would suggest to invest more on the rod if budget is limited...
