Yes you can add some backing line to make the spool larger in diameter.  In my experience you can add about 100 to 200 meter of #3 line to make the spool suitable for maeuc ...

我第一次用85 就咁打絲上去 但係圓徑太細 D絲好易上氣  之後 打左百幾M 3號上去  超好用
