1) The attack zone of maeuchi can go as far as the distance of 1 rod away from you or even further out. Some maeuchi rods (like Daiwa's Black Jack Sniper TL series) actually have larger guides (i.e. like the guides of ISO rod) so that the angler can cast the bait to a longer distance.
2) Breams exist in sandy bottom too. You can try Ma Liu Shui or Ma On Shan. That's where I made my black bream record.
3) Maeuchi has actually evolved from targeting breams to other fish type. This style of Maeuchi is more popular in HK and Taiwan simply because breams do not exist everywhere near shore/seawalls. Though the target fish is different, the baisc fishing principles remain the same.
4) Dong Chung bridge boulder is the place where you can fish in fast current. And that's a crazy fast current if you have been there. Yes you are right that under strong current fish would need to hide/rest instead of eating. But the seawall/bridge boulder is actually a place for the fish to hide and they will still eat if the bait come to them. Tell you a little secret - on the No.1 and No.4 small bridge boulder in Dong Chung there are four poles. Under fast current (those that you can even let the bait drift slower with 5B or more lead), there is a spot where the current is relatively slower - when the current flow through from right and left sides of the pole it create a "slow current zone" that's around 1 feet in diameter. If you can sink and maintain you bait there, you chance of catching breams is higher as that's the only place the fish could stand still and try to eat. I think that's quite a good example of "fast current and fish still bite".
Fishing methodologies are quite strict and do not evolve after a certain period of time. But, as an angler, we can always make adjustments to the methodologies and apply the principles lively. Rationalising everything with principles is a good way to learn something, but too much concentration in the principles would somehow stop you from exploring new ideas and techniques.
